What Does Nervous-System Regulation Actually Mean?
Regulation is not about staying calm all the time. It is about flexibility — moving between states and finding your way back.

The phrase “nervous-system regulation” is everywhere, and it is often used loosely. In practical terms, it describes the ability to shift between states of activation and rest in ways that fit what is happening around you.
Regulation is not the same as calm
Feeling activated before a big conversation can be useful. Feeling low after a long week can be a reasonable response. Regulation is less about a single target state and more about flexibility and recovery.
Why noticing comes first
Before choosing a tool, it helps to notice what you are actually experiencing. A practice that helps when you feel revved may not help when you feel flat. That is why the Soma Atlas approach starts with the state.
A note on evidence
Some ideas about regulation are grounded in well-established physiology; others come from clinical frameworks that remain debated. We try to be clear about which is which.
